An engaging setting based on 18th and 19th century Finland (I nerded out a bit on some of the recognizable Finnish words being used), and three interesting, flawed point-of-view characters. When I did begin to feel a little bored with the slower parts, Leicht introduced something new like PLAGUE or SEA MONSTERS, and I was immediately reeled back in. The magic system is fairly straightforward, yet intriguing, especially where it trends towards ritual magic. The kainen command magic was a really neat and terrifying concept, particularly as it employed in combat situations. All in all, a very strong foray into epic fantasy for Leicht.
