Emma Cline has created something truly spectacular with ‘The Girls’. The prose is amazing, the characters relatable, and the narrative haunting. The Girls is both ‘true crime’ style fiction and coming of age novel, but still so much more than either of those genres on their own. I was left feeling completely helpless as I watched the seduction of 14-year-old Evie into a Manson family style cult. Most haunting of all is how familiar Evie’s story felt. While I obviously couldn’t relate to everything, I still saw much of myself in Evie’s hesitant adolescence, from her quiet desperation for attention to her strained rebellion from her parents. Although set in the 1960’s with a very unique set of circumstances, Evie’s story is much too familiar for comfort. ~Kelsey Myers
