What We’re Reading

As booksellers, we’re always reading. And one of our favorite things to do is talk about what we’re reading! So check out a few of the titles we’re loving right now.

The Book of Joy by Dalai Lama XIV, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Douglas Abrams

book of joy

(Order online or stop by the store!)

Any book with the happy faces of Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu gracing the cover is sure to be inspirational. That’s what I figured when I snagged a copy off the shelf. At about seventy-five pages in, I’m considering the wise words of Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu in my everyday life. Their conversation, documented by Douglas Abrams and a group of film-makers, centers on joy. The book follows their conversation, includes current research on the topic of joy, and anecdotes from the two spiritual leaders. Truly a phenomenal read that will encourage readers to consider and find more joy in their own lives.

The Fox Wish by Kimiko Aman

The illustrations really spoke to me and the story was also super cute. It reminded me of a blend between a Japanese fairy tale and an Appalachian folk tale. Really, it’s hard to go wrong with adorable foxes jumping rope.

Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera

whale rider

(Order online or over the phone!)

In honor of the first anniversary of my return from Aotearoa (New Zealand) I finally picked up Whale Rider. I’m only a few pages in, but already it is making me long to be back in the Land of the Long White Cloud. Whale Rider tells the story of a young girl, Kahu, who wants nothing but the love and attention of her great-grandfather. But he wants nothing to do with her, since it was she who broke the male lineage of the tribe. None-the-less, she strives to earn the title Whale Rider, a name taken from the legendary figure the tribe claims to be descended from.

Warcross by Marie Lu

warcross

(Order online or stop in the store!)

By far Lu’s best book to date, in my opinion. A thrilling ride that alternates seamlessly from the real world and a virtual world that holds the human population captive with the game played in it. Emika is a street smart, tough girl that moonlights as a bounty hunter. Enter Hideo Tanaka, a billionaire who needs Emika’s help with his virtual game, Warcross, and plenty of secrets.

Happy Reading!
