Upcoming September Events!

Hello readers!

Summer is steadily coming to an end. We hope you’ve been having some fun and staying cool! We are light on events this month, but happy to enjoy the calm before the holiday season starts in earnest.

First Friday Book Social with Elliot Ross and Genevieve Allison

Fort Collins Reads is pleased to announce American Backyard by Elliot Ross and Genevieve Allison as the companion book to this year’s choice, The House of Broken Angels by Luis Alberto Urrea. In the post-election spring of 2017, Elliot and Gen traveled the 2000 miles of the US-Mexico border. This journey is the inspiration behind American Backyard, an amalgam of portraiture and topographical studies of border security infrastructure that exposes the reality of life on the border.

Fort Collins Reads and Old Firehouse Books invite readers to meet these authors at our First Friday Book Social event. This is a casual, drop-in event taking place on Friday, Sept. 6th from 6:30 to 8:30pm at Old Firehouse Books. Light refreshments and wine will be provided for attendees.

Floral Adventures with Teresa Sabankaya!

We’re excited to be welcoming author and floral artist Teresa Sabankaya to the store! We invite you to join in on a floral adventure with Teresa at the store on Tuesday, September 10th at 6:00pm. This event will celebrate the release of Teresa’s new book The Posy Book: Garden-Inspired Bouquets That Tell a StoryAttendees will learn the backstory of the book, hear stories on life as a farmer-florist, and enjoy a floral demonstration with fresh-cut flowers.

Teresa Sabankaya is an Advanced Certified Green Gardener and the owner and creative director of Bonny Doon Garden Company in Santa Cruz. Inspired by the Victorian-era language of flowers, a posy is a small circular gathering of flowers, plants, and herbs selected to communicate a particular emotion or sentiment. The Posy Book provides step-by-step instructions and detailed recipes for posies for a variety of sentiments so you can make someone feel like a queen for the day.

We hope to see you at this event!

DimeStories at the Forge!

We’re inviting writers of all skill levels and ages to participate in our monthly DimeStories event! Join us on the second Wednesday of each month at The Forge Publick House to enjoy 3-minute stories read by the author. Sign up begins at 6:30pm and readings begin at 7:00pm. Old Firehouse Books is proud to partner with The Forge to make this event possible.

DimeStories are 3-minute stories (prose, not poetry) read by the author. They’re funny, they’re heart-wrenching. Fictional or factual, they’re always true. Founded by novelist Amy Wallen, DimeStories is now managed by Jennifer Simpson, a writer living in Albuquerque. Jennifer and the entire dime-sized staff  run on 100% volunteer power.

DimeStories events take place every second Wednesday at The Forge. We hope to see you at the event!

Stand Up, Speak Out with Susan Skog!

We’re excited to host local author Susan Skog for her latest book. Readers are invited to join us at Old Town Library on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:00pm to celebrate the release of Your Voice Matters: Stand Up, Speak Out. Old Firehouse Books is proud to partner with the Poudre River Public Library District to make this event possible. This event is free and open to the public.

Susan Skog is a trained journalist, as well as an author, speaker, and advocate for people in the developing world. Your Voice Matters is a book designed to help young people say what they have to say, with authority figures, peers, in blogs, at protests, and everything in between. The book captures dozens of today’s leading young voices speaking on a variety of topics as well as the guidance and inspiration from many sage, well-known voices. It is Skog’s hope that the book helps young adults speak their truth with power, confidence, and impact.

We hope you’ll join us at this event!

We hope you’ll help us support all these fantastic authors and their books.  You can always check the website or the Facebook events page for more details.
