Well, here we are. A week into our temporary closure and scraping by on the glorious charge of web orders and phone calls that you all have poured into our systems. We are intensely grateful and overflowing with love for you, our community–and for everyone in our online community who has ordered books from very far away!
But Governor Polis announced yesterday afternoon that the state of Colorado is going into lockdown. And obviously, this will affect everyone, including us as individuals and as a store. We like to think books are essential in this crisis; everyone needs pages to escape into to stave off fear and boredom and loneliness. Luckily, we’re allowed to continue “essential operations.”
What does that mean? The following:
We are still, obviously, closed to the public. This is not changing. It’s especially important now that the lockdown is in place. This is indefinite–you’ll know as soon as we are able to reopen; we’ll be shouting it from the rooftops!
We will still have one staff member in the store at a time, answering phones from 10am to 2pm, processing web orders, and receiving shipments, since these are “essential operations” that we must continue if we want to survive. But since we’ll only have one person at a time in the store, we beg your patience. The phones are going to be clogged. It’s probably best if you ignore our answering machine and just send us an email. Our email inbox is going to be overflowing. But we’ll keep plugging away at all of these things, and continue getting books to you as fast and as best as we can.
If you can’t get through on our phones on your first try, shoot us an email (firstname.lastname@example.org). Order online (oldfirehousebooks.com). Call back–we’re still answering from 10am to 2pm (970-484-7898). We’re going to try our best, and if we are all patient and accept that emails are probably the best way to reach us, and that it might take some time for us to respond to said emails, no one will slip through the cracks. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
No more curbside pick up. We are still doing free shipping for orders of $20 or more from our website. But we will not be doing curbside pick up or home delivery. Per the lockdown, we advise you to stay home. Stay inside unless you’re taking a walk or biking to the park for exercise. We were mitigating a lot of our shipping costs by doing deliveries for small orders, but unfortunately, we won’t be able to do that anymore. So orders of $20 or more will still ship free. And since Amazon de-prioritized books, we are currently shipping faster than they are. We highly recommend you take advantage of our free shipping and order from the website.
(If you have already placed an order for curbside or home delivery, please email us or call us with shipping information.)
Social media is the best place to get book recommendations! Hit us up on Facebook by sending us a message, tag us on Twitter or send us a DM, comment on our Instagram, shoot us an email… If you’re looking for book recommendations, come ask! You don’t have to call; we can get you recs online, and it will help us have a smoother process with only one person in the store.
This is a scary time for everyone, and a difficult time to be a small business. But with your support and all the love we can muster, we’ll weather the storm and come out the other side all right. We believe that the lockdown is the best thing for the state and our community and that, in the long run, it will help slow this pandemic and keep more people healthy. It’s hard, but we’re going to be all right. We’re going to be safe. And we hope you will be, too.
We cannot thank you enough for the support you have shown us this past week, and the support you will continue to show us in the coming month. We are determined to survive this, but we need your help to do so. We cannot begin to express how full our hearts are every time we see a new web order, every time the phone rings, every delivery we make. We are grateful and you are the most wonderful patrons we could ask for. Thank you for letting us continue to serve you in this time of crisis. Thank you for helping us stay afloat so that when this is over, we can open our doors to you with gratitude and love. Thank you.
