Darker Fiction Recs from Tara

Hello readers!

If you’re looking for some fiction with some meat on the bones, some spine-tingling, some thrilling moments, then don’t skip these books recommended by Tara for those of you love a little darkness in your fiction!

Long Bright River by Liz Moore

More of a literary mystery than a thriller, but this 500 page book was fast paced and a great read. Mickey, a cop in a rundown Philadelphia neighborhood, has lost touch with her sister Kacey, an addict and a sex worker. They pass each other periodically when Mickey is on duty, but they rarely talk.  A string of murders start to happen that are targeting women who are sex workers in the area. And then Kacey goes missing. This book explores family dynamics, the opioid crisis, and corruption within law enforcement.

The Guest List by Lucy Foley (out June 2nd)

Lucy Foley knows how to write some good thrillers. If you caught my awkward Instagram video on Independent Bookstore Day, I talked about The Hunting Party, another thriller by Foley. I think I would argue that I like The Guest List more. This thriller takes place at a wedding on a small Irish island. Someone gets murdered the night of the wedding, but no one knows who the murderer is, nor does the reader know who was murdered. Told from multiple perspectives, this fast paced book is sure to keep you guessing. Twists and turns on every page that make everyone seem to have a motive to kill and be killed.  If you are a fan of classic whodunnit mysteries, I would highly recommend The Guest List! It comes out on June 2nd, so be sure to get your pre-order in soon!

I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

The plot of this book is fairly basic: boy and girl are driving to meet boy’s parents for the first time. Throughout the trip, girl is thinking of ending things with boy. Not all that compelling. But the way that Reid tells this story made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It was creepy and suspenseful, but I couldn’t quite pinpoint why. Although there are definitely thriller elements, I would consider this more of a book that our “F-ed Up Book Club” would read. This is a short read that packs a big punch at the end of the novel.
