John Rember on A Hundred Little Pieces on the End of the World

This August, we are excited to host author John Rember in celebration of his new book A Hundred Little Pieces on the End of the World. We will be streaming this reading and discussion live on our Facebook page on Thursday, August 6th at 6pm MST. We are proud to be partnering with Trees, Water, & People on this event. Though this event is free, we do ask that you register in advance.

There are 25 spots available for attendees to participate in the Zoom meeting where they will be able to interact with John and the representative from TWP directly. These will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis. General Admission attendees will still be able to view the event on our Facebook page and questions via comments section.

Written with clarity, tenacity, humor, and warmth, A Hundred Little Pieces on the End of the World attempts to find tolerable ethical positions in the face of barely tolerable events—and the real possibility of an intolerable future. It is both a collection of gentle-spirited wisdom and a rumination on ruin, as if distilled in equal measure from the spirits of Norman Maclean’s A River Runs Through It and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.

Rember examines the practical and ethical dilemmas of climate change, population, resource depletion, and mass extinction. At the same time, he never forgets those improbable connections between human beings that lead to moments of joy, empathy, and grace.

Panoramic Diaries with Bill O’Neill and Jeni Arndt

Old Firehouse Books is thrilled to welcome back author, poet, and New Mexico State Senator Bill O’Neill. We will be hosting him this August to celebrate the release of his new novel Panoramic Diaries. He will be in conversation with Colorado State Representative Jeni Arndt. This event will be streamed live to our Facebook page on Wednesday, August 19th 7pm MST.

There are 25 spots available for attendees to participate in the Zoom meeting where they will be able to interact with Bill and Jeni directly. These will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis. General Admission attendees will still be able to view the event on our Facebook page and questions via comments section.

Signed copies of Bill’s book are also available. Orders will be processed and fulfilled after the event. In this picaresque first novel, the protagonist moves from a rebellious existence to be more focused in the surrounding adult world. As he heads once more to the freights, after working intensely for seven years with parolees in a halfway house, he brings his old railroad diaries with him. Reading them over as he bounces from rail yard to rail yard, framed by the scenery of the Southwest, he winces at his own self-absorption back then, the shame he feels about his own privilege, and the deep insecurity about his sexual worth. The path forward takes shape when he meets Kit, and they embark on a romance that parallels his becoming who he is.

We hope you’ll help us support all these fantastic authors and their books.  You can always check the website or the Facebook events page for more details–and we might have a few more events joining the schedule, so keep an eye out! You can purchase any of the books online, by clicking the titles above, or by calling the store to reserve a copy!

We hope to see you at any or all of these great events!

Happy reading!
