Coronavirus Update 8: PHEW!

Hello readers!

Well. It has been an interesting week, huh? Luckily, we have very excellent news about the state of the store: we’re COVID-free!

Our one employee who tested positive is feeling much better and is finishing up her last few days of isolation. Everyone else tested negative! We’ve got a few more days of quarantine just in case, but our manager, Logan, has been on the phone with the health department several times and we are cleared to reopen on Saturday!

Happy Halloween, friends!

All of our precautionary measures–masks, constant cleaning, plexi in front of the registers, fewer staff working at a time, distancing, etc–proved their worth last week. Our staff–even those who had direct contact with our positive tester–are safe and healthy because masks work. By closing the store and sending everyone home for an isolation period, we definitely stopped this incident from becoming any kind of outbreak.

Yesterday, some of our negative testers headed back into the store to deep clean everything and start getting caught up on receiving shipments and processing orders that we missed while we were shut down this weekend. The store has been sanitized top to bottom over the last two days, after being thoroughly ventilated for the health department’s recommended 72 hours, and they have cleared us to reopen the doors.

We will be sticking to what has been working for us all summer and fall: starting 10/31, we’ll be open to limited browsing from 10am to 2pm on weekdays and from 10am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Only 5 browsers will be allowed in at a time, and we ask that you continue to wear your masks and sanitize your hands before entering the store. We ask that you continue to limit your browse time to about 20-30 minutes so we can allow more of your fellow shoppers inside. We are not accepting cash.

Curbside pickup will resume on Saturday, 10/31, from 10am to 2pm. If you’ve got a book waiting for you, you are once again welcome to stop by anytime during the pick up window and we’ll bring your books to your car.

Home delivery will resume on Sunday, 11/1. El will be back on the road after her isolation period ends, delivering books between 5pm and 9pm on Sunday (and then resuming the Wednesday/Sunday schedule from there). If you have any questions about home delivery, we refer you to El’s marvelous FAQ post here, which has the map for the delivery area, too.

Shipping via USPS is still the safest way for us to get books to you! You can order online and we’ll mail the books right to you.

We can’t thank you enough for all your kind words of support over this last week. It’s meant so much to us to see the outpouring of well wishes for the health of our staff and store, and we are so relieved that we can come to you with such good news. To all of you who donated to our GoFundMe, once again, thank you; we’re still a little short of our goal, and anything anyone can give will help us cover this week of closure. To all of you who came to one of our digital events this week, thank you, as the more people who attend, the higher the chance we’ll get to see these authors in person when the world goes back to slightly more normal. To anyone who sent us a message on Facebook or Instagram, Twitter or through email, with love and support, we thank you for getting us through yet another crisis. We appreciate you more than you know.

We hope we’ll see you back among the stacks this weekend! Thank you so much for your patience and understanding.

Love,
–the Staff of OFB

  1. My husband and I used to live in Windsor and would go to the bookstore on our date days! That said, it was refreshing to see how you are doing and that the bookstore is still there. I loved that place. As we are both readers a well as out 3 grown children your bookstore helped us to shape 3 little girls into great readers. As a family we have a bookclub that is a zoom until this covid 19 is erradicated. So keep up what you do so well, it touches people in a big way! Thank you for doing what you do. I have been working in a public library for 19 years after we moved from Colorado.

    • Thank you so much! We love to hear from old regulars. We hope you’ve found a new, amazing indie in your new town, and if you’re ever in the area, we’d love to see you again for a visit! Thank you so much for your words of support! Stay safe and healthy!
