We’re diving into the holiday spirit and hoping you get your orders in early! The earlier, the better, what with 2020, slower-than-usual printing presses, and the mail under siege. To help you get your lists in order, we’re offering up holiday staff picks! Each of us will have a few books we think should be on your holiday lists this year for everyone from grandkids to grandmas. Here are Megan’s top three picks!
Race to the Sun, by Rebecca Roanhorse
for middle graders and up looking for non-Greek mythology to dive into
Roanhorse crafts a stunning, epic tale of adventure and family that brings the history and stories of the Navajo people to a contemporary setting, with characters who feel real, a warm wit that had me laughing out loud, and a beautiful message about learning who you are–so long as you’re brave enough to be that person.
Bonds of Brass, by Emily Skrutskie
crossover for teens and adults looking for diverse, high-action sci-fi
A high-octane, adrenaline-rush adventure feature queer rep, dastardly piloting, the best girl ever to wield a rainbow umbrella, and the minivan of spaceships, Bonds of Brass is a little bit of everything I love stuffed between two covers. If you like hotshot pilots, slow-burn romance, roommates, galactic empires, revolution, and oh-so-many feelings, you will love this book, too. It’s a perfect escape from this year.
The Midnight Bargain, by C.L. Polk
historical fantasy for the feminist magic-lover on your list
CL Polk’s historical-ish fantasy books never cease to delight me–and THE MIDNIGHT BARGAIN is no exception. The echoes of our own world’s history ripple across a new society and a new story full of romance, friendship, and magic. Fierce, independent women–and the lengths they’ll go to to preserve that independence–take center stage in a tale with all the wit and charm of an Austen novel. I could not put the book down.
You can purchase any or all of these books for anyone on your list by clicking on their titles above. Remember, we’ll deliver to you on Wednesday or Saturday!
